Abstract
In the presented study, an analysis of the growth parameters and pigment content of Scenedesmus cultures was performed using three mineral nutrient media: the complete Tamia medium, its half-modified version (Tamia ½), and Bold's basal medium (BBM). In the present study, an analysis of growth parameters and pigment content was carried out on Scenedesmus rubescens cultures grown on three mineral nutrient media: the complete Tamia medium, its half-strength modification (Tamia ½), and Bold's Basal Medium (BBM). In the conducted study, the microalgae S. rubescens were cultivated under conditions of additional carbon dioxide supply and continuous illumination for 16 days. The high specific growth rate of the culture (µ) was noted on BBM and Tamiya media, reaching 0.48 and 0.49 day⁻¹ respectively. When using Tamiya ½ medium, the specific growth rate of S. rubescens was lower amounted to 0.33 day⁻¹. Linear growth of microalgae on the three media was observed by the fourth day. During this period, the density of S. rubescens in cultivators № 1 and 3 increased almost 7 times, in variant № 2 – by 3.7 times. The maximum productivity of S. rubescens for the three experimental variants was 0.35, 0.18, and 0.31 g DM·L-1·day, respectively. No changes in the cells morphological structure were detected. Significant differences in the biochemical and kinetic growth characteristics of S. rubescens cultivated on three different nutrient media were observed. The highest concentrations of chlorophylls a and b were recorded in the microalgae cells grown on the Tamia and BBM media. The experimental results indicate very similar growth characteristics of the S. rubescens culture in variants № 1 and 3 during both the exponential and linear growth phases, which makes it possible to select conditions on the BBM medium that ensure productivity and accumulation of valuable substances similar to those achieved with the Tamia medium.
